Junquillal Sector is located in Junquillal Bay in the northeast of Guanacaste 4 km north of the fishing community Cuajiniquil in La Cruz county and includes 505 hectares of patchy secondary dry forest, a small mangrove and an estuary formed by a seasonal stream. Junquillal Bay is characterized by its scenic beauty, coral sands, crystalline waters and calm oceans. 

Sector Program Management

Junquillal Sector is a popular tourist destination for Costa Ricans and foreigners a like with its camp sites, picnic area, bathrooms, showers, and nature trails. The beach has three stars under the Bandera Azul Ecológica program,  a system of classifying public and private areas according to their efforts to conserve the environment. Sector personnel are present year round assisting tourists, maintaining sector infrastructure, camp sites, picnic areas, and trails, as well as patrolling for illegal hunting and the presence of forest fires in the dry season within the Protected Wildland Area.

History

This property was a private farm owned by Ranchos Horizontes that was donated to the Área de Conservación Guanacaste in 1988 to be used as a recreation area.
